In Iceland we used direct democracy in every community around the country for four centuries. Then there was Althing which synchronized the communities for the whole country. It was very popular but destroyed 800 years ago by European powers. Many of us are trying to re-establish it, because this wonderful solution denied corrupt powers any foothold, but we're considered to be nuts.
